Civil Service Hiring Process

1. Civil Service Exam

The process begins with the Schenectady County Civil Service Examination. Check official announcements for exam dates and eligibility criteria.

2. Selection Process

Following the exam, reachable candidates undergo physical agility testing, psychological and medical screening, and an intensive background investigation prior to consideration.

3. Final Appointment

Top candidates are interviewed by serve. Successful recruits are appointed to the force and begin academy training.

4. Police Academy

Those hired will attend a 26 week Police Academy followed by 12 weeks of field training .  After which you will be assigned to a shift.

We invest heavily in our staff through paid academy training for recruits and advanced, continuous professional development certifications for experienced officers. For example, DRE, instructor development, drone operations and bike patrol.
